Less than five months after the 2019 edition of Africa's showpiece tournament concluded, stars from the continent will converge again this week as they kick off their respective qualification campaigns for the 2021 competition.

The highest-ranked nation heading into the upcoming qualifiers is AFCON 2019 runners-up Senegal, who featured in FIFA's most recent rankings as the 20th-best team in the world. The Lions of Teranga are closely followed by North African giants Tunisia, who are ranked 29th in the world, while the Super Eagles of Nigeria are a further six places behind.
Reigning tournament champions Algeria are Africa's fourth highest-ranked nation, featuring at No. 38 in FIFA's latest rankings, while neighbours Morocco complete the top five ahead of seven-time winners Egypt.
