Tau failed to score in South Africa's final qualifier in Sudan, a defeat that resulted in Bafana missing out on qualification for next year's tournament.
However, the Brighton Hove Albion forward netted four of South Africa's eight goals in the qualifiers, seeing him finish among the most lethal players of the qualification campaign.
Only two players from the continent found the back of the net more often during the qualifiers, namely Victor Osimhen of Nigeria and Zambia's Patson Daka.
The latter, who has been linked with a move to Premier League side Manchester United, scored five goals for Zambia, but – similar to Tau – was also unable to prevent his nation's failure to qualify.
Super Eagles forward Osimhen, meanwhile, will be at the tournament in Cameroon after netting five times for his country during the qualifiers, helping Nigeria secure their ticket unbeaten in Group L.
The 22-year-old, who is expected to be one of the big stars at AFCON 2021, also assisted another six goals for his teammates throughout the qualification phase, meaning he was involved in 11 of his side's 14 goals – you can see all the top scorers by scrolling through the gallery above!
