Ghana Announce Final 2019 Africa Cup of Nations Squad, One Absa Premiership Star Included!

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah has named his final 23-man squad that will compete at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, and one Absa Premiership star is in it, as is record goalscorer Asamoah Gyan, who made a U-turn on his retirement.

The Black Stars' AFCON preparations were somewhat marred when national team record goalscorer and skipper Asamoah Gyan announced his retirement following a reported fallout with coach Appiah and fellow teammate Andre Ayew.

Gyan, who has found the back of the net on 51 occasions in 105 appearances for his country, is believed to have made a U-turn on his decision to hang up his boots after being persuaded by his country's president, in addition to being handed the role of "general captain" of the team.

A staggering 12 members of Appiah's side were part of the Ghana team that suffered defeat to eventual champions Cameroon at the 2017 edition of the spectacle.

One notable omission from Appiah's outfit is Abdul Majeed Waris, who scored just seven goals for Ligue 1 club Nantes in the 2018/19 campaign.

He joins the likes of USA-based star Ebenezer Ofori, as well as Ghana-based duo Abdul Safiu Fatawu Mohammed Alhassan in being omitted from the final selection, while Maritzburg United's Richard Ofori will be going to Egypt.

Despite only scoring one goal for Premier League side Crystal Palace last season, Jordan Ayew managed to retain his place in the squad.

After securing victories over Ethiopia (2-0) and Kenya (1-0), Ghana will continue their AFCON preparations with a friendly clash against fellow AFCON contenders Bafana Bafana in Dubai on 15 June, before they jet off to Egypt for the tournament.

The four-time AFCON champions have been placed in Group F alongside Cameroon, Benin and Guinea-Bissau.
