CAF Make Decision On AFCON Clash After Referee Drama

CAF Make Decision On AFCON Clash After Referee Drama

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) released a statement in which they revealed their final decision on the refereeing drama that spoiled Mali and Tunisia's Africa Cup of Nations encounter this week.

AFCON Ref Rushed To Hospital After Chaotic Scenes?

On Thursday, Africa's governing body of the sport said they would be gathering information following the shocking scenes in Limbe this week, after match official Janny Sikazwe blew for full-time prematurely on two separate occasions.

The incident appeared to bring the tournament into disrepute as it gained worldwide attention, though CAF decided the final score of 1-0 in favour of Mali will stand.

"The organising committee has decided to dismiss the protest lodged by the Tunisian team," their statement read.

"To homologate the match result as 1-0 in favour of Mali."

What happened?

Sikazwe caused huge controversy when he initially called time on the game after 85 minutes, but, after realising his error, resumed the match. Minutes later, however, the Zambian blew his final whistle before the allotted 90 minutes, despite there being several stoppages in the game.

The match official's actions caused fury on the Tunisia bench, as they stormed the field in protest. Sikazwe and his assistants were surrounded by security personnel and escorted off the field.

It is said that 40 minutes after the incident, the teams were informed they would need to get back out on the pitch to complete the remaining minutes, a request Tunisia reportedly refused.

This was how Tunisia's bench reacted to the referee's display:
