2021 Africa Cup Of Nations Absentee XI

With 23 of the 24 teams at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations now confirmed, here is a starting XI made up of African stars who will not be at the tournament, including players from Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.

The set of qualified teams is almost complete, with only Benin and Sierra Leone yet to learn their fate after their match was postponed until the next international break following some controversy around several players testing positive for COVID-19.

However, a strong starting XI can be formed featuring players from the rest of the nations that will be missing out on next year's tournament in Cameroon.

In goal, Denis Onyango and his Uganda side failed the qualify from Group B despite only conceding two goals in their six qualifiers, with a 1-0 defeat to Malawi in their final qualifier seeing the Sundowns goalkeeper and his national colleagues fail to secure their ticket.

At the back, Chancel Mbemba, who recently helped kick Cristiano Ronaldo and Juventus out of the UEFA Champions League with Porto, failed to make the cut after DR Congo ended up behind Gambia and Gabon in Group D.

Zambia is another team that failed to qualify, with the likes of TP Mazembe defender Kabaso Chongo and Red Bull Salzburg duo Enock Mwepu and Patson Daka being unable to show their talent on the continent's biggest stage next year.

Victor Wanyama and Kenya will also not be in Cameroon after winning just one qualifier and being overtaken by AFCON newbies Comoros in Group G.

Madagascar and their captain Abel Anicet set the previous AFCON in Egypt alight but next year's tournament will take place without them following their failure to beat Niger on the final match day, allowing Ethiopia to secure their ticket to the showpiece.

Of course, South Africa's Percy Tau also features in the Absentee XI, with the Brighton Hove forward having scored four times during qualification. Bafana Bafana midfielder Bongani Zungu also made the cut, as did Mozambique defender Reinildo Mandava and Namibia winger Deon Hotto.
