The story

Cape Town City midfield maestro, Fortune Makaringe briefly shifted his focus away from football to join the #JusticeForCwecwe march in the Mother City's CBD.

Makaringe along with scores of South Africans across the country marched on Tuesday to show support for 7-year-old Cwecwe and to demand swift action from law enforcement.

The child was allegedly raped in October of last year, reportedly on school premises in Matatiele, Eastern Cape. This incident has sparked widespread outrage and protests, drawing attention to child safety in schools, gender-based violence, and rape culture in South Africa.

As reported by EWN and other local media outlets, thousands of demonstrators in Cape Town participated in a nationwide protest in solidarity with the seven-year-old victim and her family.

However, they were left disappointed when their memorandum of demands intended for the Western Cape Education MEC was not delivered. The demonstration ended violently, with police officers using a stun grenade to disperse the crowd.

Makaringe shared a gallery of images from the protest, including a snap of himself holding a placard that read, "Is justice for the perpetrators? If not, something must be done with Jaco Pieterse." Pieterse is the Bergview College principal, who is widely alleged on social media as a suspect in the case.

"As a son, husband, dad, uncle, fellow student and an educator by profession before the role of being an idol to the footballing fraternity. I absolutely felt the need to March on and support the rally for #justice4cwecwe. It goes beyond what is happening now," wrote Makaringe in his lengthy IG caption.

"As a community that stands for social coherence and the call to groom and uplift young kids to become great human beings, we stand to fight against anyone that touches our kids (male or female). They deserve to feel safe around their mentors," added the ex-Buccaneer.
