Cardoso Backs Midfielder For New Sundowns Contract?

Cardoso Backs Midfielder For New Sundowns Contract?

Mamelodi Sundowns are believed to be close to securing midfielder Sphelele Mkhulise for another year, potentially extending his stay at the club until June 2026, the Siya crew has been informed.

Reliable sources close to the club have indicated that Mkhulise has been offered a new one-year contract with an optional additional year.

Insiders added that Mkhulise's previous contract, which was extended at the start of this season, was set to expire, prompting the club to offer a new deal to ensure his presence next season.

"It was just a one-year renewal in July last year which is ending in June this year and that's why he has now been offered another one-year with a one-year option. So, what it means is he is still believed to be at the team at least until June 2026. If the team exercises the one-year option he could still be at the club until June 2027. So, yes, even though it is not a done deal yet, there is light at the end of the tunnel for a new deal for Mkhulise," the Siya source stated.

A second insider mentioned how new coach Miguel Cardoso's trust in the 28-year-old has played a role in the contract extension.

"The coach has made it clear that Mkhulise is one of the players that he really wants to use in the team. He believes that he has different attributes to most of the players in the team's midfield and that has also helped management in offering him a new one-year deal with a one-year option. So, for now, we can say he has a future at Sundowns if you look at the way things are working out for him," the second source stated.

This season, Mkhulise has participated in a fair amount of Betway Premiership games so far, scoring two goals in the local league and scoring another in the CAF Champions League.

Soccer Laduma contacted Sundowns for comment but the club had not responded by the time this report was published.
