Chiefs Thrash Free Agents To Advance In Nedbank Cup

Kaizer Chiefs progressed to the Nedbank Cup round of 16 after thrashing Free Agents FC 4-0 on Sunday evening.

Nedbank Cup

Result: Kaizer Chiefs 4-0 Free Agents

Date: 26 January 2025

Venue: FNB Stadium

Chiefs made six changes following their narrow win over Sekhukhune United, as Mfundo Vilakazi, Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, Yusuf Maart, Happy Mashiane and Reeve Frosler were brought in.

Amakhosi had a bright start as within the first four minutes Ngcobo was unfortunate not to open the scoring with low strike that came off the inside of the post and went out of goal.

However, Pule Mmodi eventually sent Chiefs ahead on 18 minutes with a strike over goalkeeper Ramanus Igidimba from a long kick by shot-stopper Bruce Bvuma.

The Soweto giants remained on the front foot and just before the half-hour mark Mmodi doubled their lead with a composed finish in the box from a cut-back by Wandile Duba.

Chiefs should have been 3-0 up a moment later after Mmodi eliminated Igidimba and played a square pass for a tap-in but Mashiane did not have the finishing touches.

Amakhosi had an injury blow just before the break as Duba was stretchered off down the tunnel and was replaced by Ranga Chivaviro.

Chiefs refreshed their team at half-time as Maart, who was a yellow card away from suspension, was replaced by Sibongiseni Mthethwa while Gaston Sirino returned from a long injury lay-off in place of Ngcobo.

Free Agents were alive in the encounter for the first 15 minutes before Inacio Miguel made it 3-0 for The Glamour Boys with a free header from a cross by Mashiane.

It went from bad to worse for Olaitan Oladeru's charges as they were down to ten men in the same moment after Saheed Adebayo was red-carded for protesting the goal by Chiefs.

Amakhosi did not immediately take control of the game but Ranga Chivaviro made it 4-0 for the hosts seven minutes before time with a strike past substitute goalkeeper Tsebo Shabalala from a through ball by George Matlou.

It was a one-way traffic for Chiefs in the dying minutes as they booked their spot in the last 16.

Here's how they lined up:

Kaizer Chiefs: Bvuma, Frosler, Ditlhokwe, Miguel, Mashiane, Maart, Ngcobo, Matlou, Vilakazi, Mmodi, Duba
