The story
Former South Africa Women's National team captain and star player, Portia Modise shared her honest view regarding her relationship, or lack thereof, with Desiree Ellis.
Modise, who retired in 2015 and was the first African football player to score 100 international goals, doesn't shy away from expressing her true feelings about the current Banyana boss.
Speaking to Morena Mothupi on Smash Sports' "Football Faras" podcast, the 41-year-old made it clear that her and the four-time CAF Women's Coach of the Year, have never been close on and off the pitch.
"We were never friends. She was my teammate. Ask all the people who are playing football, not all of them are friends. We were brought together by our jobs," shared Modise.
"There could 25 of us in a team, I'll tell you I have my best friend but at the same time, understand that I need to work together with these teammates, but if there's something bothering me I know who I can go and speak to and I know they'll keep my secret.
"But understanding in the work place, you need to be able to work with everyone because that is not your company, it's someone else's. And you're not representing yourself, you are representing everyone," added Modise.

In the past, 'Bashin', as Modise is affectionately known, Modise has not held back in sharing her unfavourable opinion of Ellis.
After Banyana failed to qualify for this year's Paris Olympic Games, Modise called out Ellis for showing favouritism in her selection and went as far as calling for her to be relieved of her duties.
Although Modise is yet to make inroads as a coach after retirement, she enjoyed a glittering playing career after making her international debut in 2000, aged 16, and going on to make a record number of appearances for Banyana Banyana.
In 2005 she was nominated for the FIFA Women's Player of the Year and the following year, she claimed the Player of the Tournament award at WAFCON.
