When the two African nations faced off at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algiers, they were coming from the Africa Cup of Nations having had contrasting fortunes.
South Africa, whom many had doubts about going into the tournament, ended up finishing in third place, the first time they had managed to accomplish this in 24 years.
In the case of the Desert Foxes, many had high hopes for the 2019 champions in the Ivory Coast, but they ended up having a disappointing campaign as they were eliminated at the group stage without a single victory.
The Algerian Football Federation felt this necessitated a fresh start so they fired Djamel Belmadi and replaced him with Vladimir Petkovic.
The latest international break, which concluded earlier this week, was the Swiss tactician's first opportunity to lead the north African juggernauts out, and he decided to give a number of Algerian stars their first opportunity to play for the national team, with one of them being Anis Hadj Moussa.
Following the draw against the 2023 AFCON bronze medallists, the 22-year-old compared playing South Africa to their first friendly if the international break against Bolivia.
"It was a match at the highest level, during which we saw many comebacks and opportunities," the forward said, as per Kooora.
"We were late on two occasions and in the end we knew how to come back.
"The most important thing is that we were not defeated.
