Cassius To MLS Is 'Start Of A New Era'

South African renowned agent Mike Makaab has expressed his view on whether Cassius Mailula's reported move to the MLS is sensational for his career.

Sundowns shocked the football fraternity on Monday after releasing a statement that the club is in discussions with an unnamed club in North America, that has expressed interest in signing Mailula.

There has been subsequent reports that the club in question is Major League Soccer outfit Toronto FC.

Makaab says he believes if the move was to happen, it would be good for the Masandawana academy graduate, because if he does well, his next step would be moving to bigger leagues in Europe.

"That's exciting for the young man. Is it the right move for him to go to the MLS? I think it is. Because if he does well there, the next obvious destination is Europe," Makaab said on Gagasi FM's Extra Time

"And he's not getting any younger, this is the right time for him to make his move. So if it does happen, I think it would be fantastic for him, good for the football club as well, which will show us that they are willing to listen to offers for their talented young players and also good for South African football.

"Don't forget Lionel Messi just joined Inter Miami in the MLS and there's a very strong chance that Neymar is going to follow suit," he said.

The experienced agent went on and said he hopes Mailula will follow former Maritzburg United striker Bongokuhle Hlongwane and former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Njabulo Blom to the MLS in such a short period of time. It's a start of a new era in South African football, as Bafana Bafana were last successful when they had a lot of players moving abroad in the 1990s, which is something that eventually faded.

"We used to place three, four players every transfer window into various parts of Europe, at that point South Africa was doing well at the international stage, '96 we were Afcon champions, '98 we were beaten in the (Afcon) final. Unfortunately that's fallen by the wayside. I'm hoping this is a start of a new era for South African football," he added.
