In the same week of his announcement, it appeared the Argentine was set to make a stunning return to the Catalan giants, whose head coach Xavi Hernandez was said to be pushing for Messi's arrival after private talks with his former teammate.
It was not to be, however, as the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner revealed that his difficult time in Paris greatly influenced his call to take his career to the MLS.

Speaking recently about his thought process ahead of his official unveiling in the United States this coming weekend, Messi insisted he, his family and everyone in his camp are thrilled with the direction they have taken.
"Well, we are happy with the decision we made," he said, according to Mundo Deportivo.
"(I am) prepared and eager to face the new challenge, the new change, my mentality and my head will not change and I will try where I have to be now to give the maximum for myself and for my new club and try to perform at the highest level."

Messi has left Europe following an 18-year career at the highest level, during which he scored 704 goals and won the Ballon d'Or seven times.
