The Dutch Public Prosecution Service has decided to prosecute former Ajax Amsterdam and Sevilla star Quincy Promes on charges relating to his involvement in the importing of 1 370kg worth of cocaine, which was seized in an Antwerp port in 2020.
According to Het Parool, the 31-year-old had already been suspected of being involved in drug-trafficking, with the Amsterdam criminal investigation department having approached the attacker about his links to a criminal organisation on two separate occasions previously.
Promes is also facing a charge relating to aggravated assault after new evidence emerged regarding a stabbing incident.
In the investigation pertaining to the alleged drug smuggling of the attacker, the police tapped his phone, and in tapped conversations, the Amsterdam native spoke about a stabbing during a family party. The former FC Twente man is believed to have stabbed his cousin in the knee with a knife during the function.
For that case, the Public Prosecution Service demanded a prison sentence of two years against the footballer for aggravated assault back in March, as per France24.
