Lionel Messi did not need to win the FIFA World Cup to prove he is the best footballer of all-time, according to Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta.
Messi played a vital role as the South American side clinched their third World Cup title after defeating France on penalties in the final.
World Cup Final Ref Hits Back At Messi Goal Claims
The 35-year-old was named Player of the Tournament after finishing with seven goals and three assists.
However, the Hammers were awarded a penalty two minutes later when William Saliba brought down Jarrod Bowen.
Iniesta, who won the World Cup with Spain in 2010, claims his former Barcelona teammate is the best even if he ended up on the losing side against France.
"For me it wasn't necessary for Messi to win the World Cup to consider him the best. With or without the World Cup, he is the best. And I think that the person who didn't believe that before winning the World Cup will still find some excuse to stick to his idea."
"But, in any case, I think the title has been totally deserved not only for him but for all of Argentina.
"He started by losing the first match, he withstood that added pressure, to the one he was already under. For me, he is the deserved champion," he stated.
