Yet another international manager has left his post after being knocked out of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Inside Onana's Row With Cameroon Boss At World Cup
Following Gerardo Martino's sacking as Mexico head coach after they failed to qualify for the round of 16, Belgium boss Roberto Martinez has confirmed he has stepped aside from his role.
Speaking after the Red Devils' 0-0 draw with Croatia on Thursday, the Spaniard stated that his time in charge of the European nation has come to an end.
"This was my last game as national coach. I said goodbye to the players and staff," he said, according to Goal.
"Today we were ourselves again. It is never easy to win a match at a World Cup. In that first match against Canada we won, but we weren't ourselves. We deservedly lost the second match against Morocco. We weren't ready.
"Today we created a lot of chances, so no, I have no regrets. We can leave the World Cup with our heads held high.
"Of course, elimination in the group stage is not enough for Belgium. We wanted to push through, but every country wants that. This is the best tournament in the world.
"We won our three group matches at the [2018] World Cup, and also at the [2020] European Championship. But then we were also eliminated. For me the feeling is the same. I can accept this way of losing."
Substitute Romelu Lukaku squandered a number of chance late in the second half as Belgium went in search of a much-needed winner before leaving the field visibly devastated.
Martinez spent six-and-a-half years in charge of the Belgian national side and ends his spell without having claimed silverware.
