England boss Gareth Southgate has revealed why he left Liverpool superstar Trent-Alexander Arnold out of his 23-man squad to take on Germany on Monday night.
Ahead of the Three Lions' thrilling 3-3 draw at Wembley Stadium on Monday, a lot of the discussion was centred around Southgate's decision to leave the 23-year-old right-back out of his matchday squad.
Alexander-Arnold was named in the 52-year-old's 28-man team for this international break but did not play a single minute as England lost 1-0 to Italy last Friday and claimed a draw against Hansi Flick's Germany.
Speaking after the game, Southgate insisted the fullback's latest omission does not mean he will not be included in his 2022 FIFA World Cup squad, and explained why others in his position are currently ahead of him.
"I mean, we've got a big squad with us and we've got four right-backs who are super quality," he said, according to the Metro.
"At the moment, Kieran Trippier is playing exceptionally well and Reece James has been one of the outstanding players in the Premier League at the start of the season.
"But Trent is a very, very good footballer and that's why we picked him in the [initial] squad."
