It has emerged that Erling Haaland "felt sorry" for Robert Lewandowski when Bayern Munich were trying to replace their star striker with the Norwegian in the latest transfer window.
Report: Pep Rejected Chance To Sign PSG Superstar
It was well known among elite European clubs that Haaland would be available for a relatively low price in the latest window due the release clause in his contract with Borussia Dortmund.
Bayern were one of the clubs in contention to sign the 22-year-old hitman as they looked to once again bring one of BVB's star players to the Allianz Arena, although the Norwegian eventually chose to join Manchester City instead.
Having contested for the 2021/22 Kicker-Torjägerkanone (Bundesliga Golden Boot) with the Bavarians' superstar forward Lewandowski, it has now been revealed that Haaland felt sorry for the Poland international for the way Bayern treated him.
"If I try to imagine how Lewandowski thinks..." the City striker says in an upcoming documentary called Haaland: The Big Decision, as per talkSPORT.
"I don't know how many goals and titles he has for the club. Then I do actually feel a little sorry for him.
"At the same time, it's a chance for him to take the next step in his career. It feels disrespectful, but at the same time it is an opportunity for him."
Here are the 10 most expensive transfers of this past window:
Despite scoring 50 goals for Die Roten during the 2021/22 season, Lewandowski was seemingly expendable at that moment, and Bayern's interest in Haaland was believed to be a contributing factor in the Pole pushing for a move away from Munich.
"Robert is a very intelligent person," Pini Zahavi, Lewandowski's agent, told BILD.
"Not just the best striker in the world.
"He knows exactly what is happening around him and what FC Bayern had planned. So, Robert knew all along that Bayern wanted to replace him with Haaland.
"The football world is big, but there are no secrets."
Now both strikers continue to flourish outside of Germany, with Lewandowski having scored five goals in four games for Barcelona, and Haaland having scored 10 goals in six games for the EPL champions.
