A distinguished delegation of football officials, legends, and politicians is set to gather in Makhanda, Sarah Baartman District, on 17 April 2025 to commemorate 59 years of the Makana Football Association.
This association, founded by Robben Island political prisoners in 1966, holds significant historical and cultural value.
Speaking exclusively to Soccer Laduma, Luyanda Papu of the New Year’s Cup Institute, the key organiser of the event, shared insights into the milestone celebration. Among the notable guests will be former South African President Kgalema Motlanthe, who played football during his time as a Robben Island political prisoner. His Excellency will participate virtually by delivering a pre-recorded message of support.
