Downs Eye Another Overseas-Based Star

Downs Eye Another Overseas-Based Star

Following Thabo Cele’s successful return from Europe to join Kaizer Chiefs, yet another South African footballer based overseas could be on the verge of a return to the PSL – this time, with Mamelodi Sundowns understood to be showing serious interest in that player.

Cele, who rejoined the local football scene in January after a stint with Russian side Fakel Voronezh, has quickly made a name for himself in the colours of Amakhosi.

His standout performances have played a crucial role in helping Chiefs reach the Nedbank Cup final, including their hard-fought victory over Sundowns this past weekend.

A graduate of the respected KZN Football Academy – an institution known for producing top talent that often lands in Portugal – Cele has become a poster boy for players making successful transitions from European football back to the domestic scene.

Now, another KZN Football Academy product is attracting attention back home.

Mhleli Innocent Mabuza, a 24-year-old right back currently playing for Louletano DC in Portugal, is believed to be on the radar of Sundowns, the reigning Betway Premiership champions.

Known affectionately as “Ferrari” for his blistering pace and attacking flair, Mabuza fits the mould of the modern right back.

He began his Portuguese journey in 2018 with Galitos FC U19s and has since featured for clubs including Lusitano Ginasio Clube, Paredes FC, and AC Vila Mea before landing at Louletano.

According to a source close to the situation, Sundowns have been closely monitoring Mabuza with an eye on bringing him to Chloorkop.

“Sundowns have identified Mhleli Innocent Mabuza as a potential signing for the club. He is a South African right-back who is playing in Portugal for Louletano DC. The club (Sundowns) has been following him, with the possibility of making a formal approach to begin talks with his club in Portugal,” the source revealed.

This possible move echoes that of another Mzansi export, Sphephelo ‘Yaya’ Sithole, who is also reportedly being courted by PSL clubs.
