Motsepe Addresses Stadium Violence & Corruption

Motsepe Addresses Stadium Violence & Corruption

CAF president Patrice Motsepe has addressed the recent stadium violence witnessed in the CAF Champions League.

The clash between Mamelodi Sundowns and Esperance at Loftus Stadium a few weeks ago sparked controversy for the violence of supporters.

The CAF Disciplinary committee ruled Sundowns to have breached Article 82 and 83.2 of the CAF Disciplinary Code as well as Articles 32 and 35 of the CAF Safety and Security Regulations. The Tshwane giants were fined close to R2 million.

Speaking after announcing a major partnership renewal with Global Africa Logistics in Sandton on Wednesday, Motsepe said that CAF is working to ensure that stadiums are a safe environment for families.

"We need to send a message to all our football supporters that there is a commitment to make sure that going to the stadium is safe. There is a huge engagement underway within CAF and talking to other condeferations on what measures they have taken. I am confident we will make progress because we need our families to come to the stadium, knowing that it's a wonderful experience," Motsepe told media.

With the South African Football Association recently being in the media for the wrong reasons, reports emerged that they were unable to pay March salaries on time. SAFA president Danny Jordaan was also in the media for the wrong reasons, appearing in court for alleged fraud before the charges were withdrawn in February.

Motsepe made it clear that CAF will no tolerate corruption in associations and that they would take action against anyone found guilty of being in the wrong.

"Of course, I've got to respect disciplinary bodies within CAF. We've got a disciplinary board and an appeal board. We've got FIFA and CAS and I also have to respect the laws of every country on the continent, their legal processes," Motsepe said.

"I have to emphasise that we have to look at football as an asset of our people. At all times, we have to make enormous sacrifices and contributions. We are looking at every country to make sure that there is due process, there's legality and there's ethics and zero tolerance of corruption. If we get anybody having been involved in conduct that violates the CAF statutes and regulations, we will take action.

"We consistently review our rules because sometimes the problem is our rules. They've been there for so many years and the consequences are not as extreme as the misdemeanours and violations. We can't close our eyes to irregular conduct."
