What Does R900m Mean For PSL Clubs?

What Does R900m Mean For PSL Clubs?

With over two months having past since the launch of new Premiership sponsors Betway boosting the top flight with approximately R900 million, it remains to be seen how the finances will be distributed to clubs.

At the sponsorship announcement event, it was noted that the details will be revealed soon, while Soccer Laduma now speaks to leading clubs in South Africa about their respective knowledge of the financial distribution.

The Siya crew discussed the situation with insiders from different clubs who expressed their uncertainty about the league's sponsorship details.

One insider told Soccer Laduma that the clubs don't know the prize money for this seasons PSL champions.

"For now, we are just playing in the league like we used to last season. Even those who sit on the board of the PSL have not told us how much the prize money will be. So in our minds we are playing for the R15 million first place prize money. The only thing that we were told was just before the start of the season that we should change the logo on the playing jersey from DStv Premiership to Betway Premiership. But the rest, nothing has been communicated yet. But maybe in the next EXCO meeting they will update the teams on that," a PSL club source told Soccer Laduma, while each of the following insiders also preferred to remain anonymous.

Then an insider from another top PSL club stated they are not sure whether the Q-Innovations are still in place for this campaign.

"You know there used to be the Quarter Innovations but for now there is nothing that we know about that. We are just playing, knowing that there will be a winner at the end of the season but as to how much the winner will get, no one really knows. We are playing knowing that there is a sponsor but as for the financial details, we haven't been told about that yet," the second insider at a PSL club told the Siya crew.

A third Siya source at a top PSL club discussed their monthly grant, which remains the same amount as last season.

"As for the winners' prize money we really don't know. But for the monthly PSL grants it's still R2.5 million just like last season when it was under DStv. So, we are not sure whether there will be an increase in the league winner's prize money or not. We feel like things were not fully finalised when the sponsorship was launched and when the season started on 14th September. So let's wait and see what will happen before December. Then maybe the league will announce the prize money and other initiatives as well," the third source stated.

A fourth source, from a different club, also wanted to know about the prize money in the Betway Premiership.

"You know, even the trophy, we don't know what kind of trophy we are playing for. Maybe the time they launch the trophy then they will also inform us as teams about the prize money. As of now, we don't even know how much we are playing for. However it's good to know that the PSL has done great work in securing the new sponsorship. We are playing for something, though at the moment we don't know how much," the fourth Siya source stated.

The PSL has been efficient securing Betway as the headline sponsor of the top flight in South Africa. The R900 million Betway sponsorship for the PSL is expected to bring significant financial backing to the league, but the details of how the funds will be distributed remain unclear at the moment. As clubs await further communication from the PSL, the focus remains on the field, with the hope that financial details and prize money will be clarified soon.

Soccer Laduma contacted the PSL to comment on these details but did not receive a response by the time this report was published.
