According to a report by Egyptian publication Almasryalyoum, Zamalek officials, led by club president Hussein Labib, have initiated contact with the Spanish tactician’s camp with the aim of securing his services ahead of the 2025/26 season.
This follows the imminent departure of Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro, who is expected to leave the club at the end of the season.
It is understood that the Cairo-based outfit has reached out to Riveiro’s agent with the intention of holding formal talks either before or after the CAF Champions League semi-final second leg between Pirates and Pyramids FC, scheduled to take place in Cairo.
Zamalek are said to be keen on wrapping up negotiations early and potentially announcing their new head coach before the conclusion of the current campaign.
Riveiro, however, is reported to have responded with a polite but firm request for patience. Sources indicate that while the 48-year-old Spaniard is open to the prospect of joining the Egyptian Premier League giants, he has asked the club to wait until his current commitments with Pirates have been fulfilled.
And understandably so.
The Buccaneers are currently navigating one of the most demanding periods of their season, with the second leg of their CAF Champions League semi-final on the horizon. In addition to their continental campaign, Pirates are also through to the final of the Nedbank Cup and remain in contention for a strong finish in the Betway Premiership.
