All Square - The Background For City v SSU

Benni v Tinkler - From Teammates To Rivals
With City only being formed on the back of Mpumalang Black Aces at the start of the 2016/17 season, there isn't too much history between the two sides, but after three games they're all squad in terms of results.
SuperSport won their last encounter with an emphatic 4-2 victory back in May, but the first time the teams met it ended with City lifting the Telkom Knockout title in December last year. The game inbetween these two ended as a 1-1 draw.
So, as Benni McCarthy and Eric Tinkler – who are both reaching their first final with their current clubs – prepare to do battle at Moses Mabhida tonight, it's a level playing field in terms of history. One City win, one SuperSport win, and one draw.
With no suspensions and next to no injuries, the two coaches have almost full squads to choose from as they select their starting XIs for the encounter, although Tinkler may have a slight advantage given the fact that a lot of McCarthy's players played under him in the Western Cape last season.

City – who beat Polokwane City and reigning champs, Bidvest Wits on the way to this stage – are playing in their first MTN8 final ever, while Matsatsantsa are reaching their second final since the MTN8 was born in 2008, but haven't won a top eight competition since 2004's Super Eight Cup.
Tinkler's side beat Kaizer Chiefs and Maritzburg United to reach the final.
In terms of their playing history, McCarthy won the MTN8 with Orlando Pirates back in 2011, while Tinkler was twice on the losing side in the BP Top Eight, finishing as runner-up in 1989 and 1990 at Bidvest Wits.
The game will get underway at 19h00 this evening.
Cape Town City take on SuperSport United in the MTN8 final today as the two clubs clash for the fourth time – and second time in a final – in the last 18 months.
