According to high-ranking sources at Chloorkop, goalkeeper Ronwen Williams has agreed to a new deal in principle with Mamelodi Sundowns.
The Bafana Bafana skipper joined the Brazilians in July 2022 from crosstown rivals, SuperSport United, where he had spent nearly two decades dating as far back as his academy days in his teenage years.
Following the emotional farewell, Sundowns confirmed Williams had penned a five-year deal, which is understood to have been split into options.
While that agreement is still very much in place, the Siya crew has been informed that the club has since offered the keeper new terms.
"It's been almost a done deal because the two parties have agreed and Ronwen is happy to be at Sundowns for the long-term," explained a source in the know.
The initial move came under some scrutiny at first from some in the football fraternity given that both Denis Onyango and Kennedy Mweene appeared to still be the preferred choices at Sundowns at the time.
But that debate was quickly squashed when Williams made 38 appearances in all competitions and was voted the DStv Premiership Goalkeeper of the Season.
The beginning of 2024 was arguably the pinnacle of his career so far as Williams picked up the same accolade at the Africa Cup of Nations with Bafana Bafana winning the bronze medal under coach Hugo Broos.
Williams also made history by saving four penalties in the quarterfinal clash against Cape Verde to send Bafana to the last four. It comes as no surprise that he's been offered a new deal at Sundowns.
