Kaizer Chiefs are understood to be showing serious interest in rising midfield star Olwethu Songelwa, a 17-year-old talent who has been making waves since joining Sekhukhune United’s DStv Diski Challenge squad last year.
Nicknamed Mshishi – a tribute to Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns playmaker Themba Zwane – Songelwa hails from Makhanda in the Eastern Cape and has been earning admiration for his intelligence on the ball, tactical awareness, and creativity in the middle of the park.

The Siya crew has been informed that the Soweto giants have been tracking the player since late last year, after he made a name for himself during the Engen Knockout Challenge.
Chiefs were notably impressed with his performance in a thrilling 2-2 draw between eBhayi FC (Eastern Cape) and their own side during the tournament.
“Kaizer Chiefs scouts are impressed by Olwethu, the talented youngster from Sekhukhune United. They are monitoring the boy and showing serious interest in his services,” a source close to the situation confirmed to the Siya crew.
Songelwa’s journey began with Sophia Young Stars and later eBhayi FC, before his standout displays earned him the Midfielder of the Tournament accolade at the 2024 Eastern Cape Engen Knockout Challenge.
His subsequent move to Sekhukhune – reportedly influenced by former Chiefs scout Sinesipho Mali, now working with Babina Noko – was seen as a major step in his career.
Now, with Thembela ‘Tera’ Maliwa at the helm of scouting and recruitment at Chiefs, insiders believe a move for Songelwa could be on the cards, if all goes according to plan.
Maliwa, who was instrumental in building a strong youth network during his time at Sundowns, is said to be keen on adding high-potential talents to the Amakhosi ranks as part of the club’s long-term rebuilding strategy.

Cape Town City were also believed to have monitored the midfielder before he committed to Sekhukhune, which highlights the level of interest he’s already generating across the PSL landscape.
Whether or not Chiefs make a formal approach remains to be seen, but one thing is certain – Mshishi Songelwa is a name South African football fans may be hearing a lot more of in the near future.
