Kaizer Chiefs legend and former goalscoring machine Collins Mbesuma has called on the current generation of Amakhosi players to rise to the occasion when they face Mamelodi Sundowns in the Nedbank Cup semi-final this weekend.
The highly anticipated clash will be the fourth meeting between the two sides this season, with Sundowns holding a 100% record over their rivals in 2024/25.
But Mbesuma, who famously donned the colours of both clubs during his illustrious career, believes the cup stage presents a fresh opportunity for Chiefs to change the narrative.
"Every time these sides meet it’s always heated. A cup match is a different ball game and it will be about which team carries the day,” he told Chiefs' official website.

“I know Sundowns have been dominating and doing well, but I believe that anything can happen in a cup game, and Chiefs can turn their season around with a win. They need to approach the match with a cup game mindset and a determination to come out victorious.”
The Glamour Boys have endured another trophyless campaign so far and are desperate to break their silverware drought, making this semi-final their last realistic chance of lifting a trophy this season. Mbesuma insists that the squad has what it takes to upset the odds.
"I’m confident that they have the talent to go out there and make a statement. It's time for them to step up and show what they're capable of," he urged.
Chiefs and Sundowns will lock horns on Sunday at Loftus Versveld Stadium, with a place in the Nedbank Cup final at stake.
