The story
In light of Jomo Sono's remarks about Patrick Maswanganyi and his thoughts on the Pirates attacking midfelder wearing the famous number at Pirates, Jabu Mahlangu weighed in.
Speaking on his podcast, iDiski Shandis, the former Amakhosi cult hero doesn't believe in the practice of clubs retiring jersey numbers of their legends.
The former Bafana Bafana baller feels that if every single legend gatekept the numbers they wore as players, there would be no numbers left for current players to wear.
"What is so important to some former players, especially the generation of Bra J [Ephraim Jomo Sono], and even Doctor Khumalo, about the numbers they wore? Do they belong to them exclusively?"
"So, number is Bra J's, number 15 belongs to uMdokisi [Doctor Khumalo], number 11 is Teenage [Dladla], number 12 with Ace Ntsoelengoe. Imagine retiring the numbers of all those legends, even the likes of Professor Ngubane, what would the players use? Alphabets? Ama-Grootman need to stop with this, let the numbers be used," added a passionate Mahlangu.
