What's the story?
As expected, Bafana Bafana came under a lot criticism for their defeat to Mali in the Africa Cup of Nations Group E opening match.
Hugo Broos' men couldn't follow up a promising first-half performance, conceding two goals just after the hour mark, with social media users responding to the match in large numbers, making Bafana a trending topic on Twitter/X.

Bafana reactions
Bafana Bafana did not get off to an ideal start at the Africa Cup of Nations on Tuesday night, succumbing to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Mali.
Second-half goals from Hamari Traori and Lassine Sinayoko was enough to secure all three points for the West African outfit, who now top Group E on goal difference.
Twitter/X was a buzz from the moment the first whistle went and the commentary went into overdrive with many critiquing Percy Tau's penalty miss and Bafana's poor second-half effort.
EFF leader Julius Malema called for changes at SAFA after the crushing loss, while Maps Maponyane and Prince Kaybee also shared their views on the current state of Bafana Bafana.

Here are the best social media reactions to Bafana's 2-0 loss to Mali:
The problem of Bafana is a similar problem to that of Kaizer Chiefs. You can bring in as many coaches as you like, they'll all fail and no great, self respecting coach with a bright future will take those jobs. The problem starts at the very top of the organisations.

Jokes aside, what is really the problem at Bafana Bafana?

That's what happens when you miss a lot of chances, you always get punished afterwards.

Bafana Bafana were pretty good otherwise and would have deserved a better result.
Still 2 games that the boys can win to qualify for the knockouts.

We must demand the removal of the @MYANC deployed cadre called Danny Jordan. He single handedly disrupted and completely collapsed our football. It's time to take action and put an end to this nonsense.??

I still have faith Bafana will make it far in this Afcon .

Sad thing about Bafana losing is the emergence of all manner of charlatans who don't even watch the game, coming here to mock them. Making it worse are people who should know better throwing insults around. We lost just one match and have two to go. No need to panic, yet

Supporting Bafana is a form of self-hate.
— Penuel The Black Pen (@GodPenuel) January 17, 2024
At least the ANC gives grants freebies... aBafana offer nothing.
Stop supporting the guys rather support Sundowns. Also, invest in youth development in football.
aBafana don't deserve our support.

After this y'all must NEVER ask us why we don't support Bafana Bafana as much as the Springboks.
— Paballo?? (@paballo_maseko) January 16, 2024
"Why don't you support Bafana Bafana the same way you support the Springboks"…. This should answer that stupid question.
