Mabasa, Bafana Issue Cancels Out Ribeiro Calls?

Mabasa, Bafana Issue Cancels Out Ribeiro Calls?

There has been calls for Mamelodi Sundowns forward Lucas Ribeiro Costa to be naturalized for Bafana Bafana but little has been said of the seemingly injustice of Orlando Pirates striker Tshegofatso Mabasa.

In spite of Sundowns boasting the majority of players in Bafana squad, there has been calls for Costa, a Brazilian, given his form to be naturalized so he can be eligible for South Africa.

However, there has been seemingly an injustice at home, with Mabasa being overlooked for Bafana selections.

Aesthetics aside and looking at the numbers, Costa has scored 32 goals since he arrived in the PSL in the 2023/24 season, having netted 16 last term and is currently on the same number of goals.

Mabasa has also been in good form in front of goals and has actually scored 32 goals since the beginning of the 2023/24 campaign, with 19 goals last term and has scored 13 currently.

The former Bloemfontein Celtic striker has not featured for Bafana since playing 34 minutes in a World Cup qualifier against Ethiopia in October 2021, his only competitive game in the green and yellow shirt.

"I think with the national team is a bit disappointing where you find that you don't make the final squad. But one thing about myself and what the journey has taught me is that I will continue to knock on that door," Mabasa opened up on the matter in an interview on SoccerBeat YouTube Channel.

"And that door will eventually open. I don't doubt that for one bit, I will get my opportunity again in the national team. But for now I'll keep on pushing, hopefully that opportunity will come again.

"Probably the consistency (is what is lacking), I'd love to score a lot more in a longer run of games. Probably in a span of eight games, have like 15 goals and make that decision easy that he has to choose, not for it to be as difficult as it has been," Mabasa added.

Mabasa has also somewhat not being trusted by his club coach Jose Riveiro in big games.

The 26-year-old came off the bench with 21 minutes to go in a 4-1 defeat against Mamelodi Sundowns and was an unused substitute in a 2-1 win against the same opposition in top-of-the-table clashes, with Evidence Makgopa preferred instead.
