Nigeria Include Kaizer Chiefs Man In Final Africa Cup of Nations Squad

Nigeria have named their final 23-man squad for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, and a Kaizer Chiefs player was included in the squad, but a certain a Premier League star was snubbed.

Leicester City forward Kelechi Iheanacho was named in Gernot Rohr's 25-man provisional squad for the African spectacle, but was dropped for the final selection, along with two others, for the tournament.

Another omission from the side that will do duty in Egypt is midfielder Semi Ajayi, who plies his trade in England for Championship outfit Rotherham United.

The majority of the 23 players selected to do duty by Rohr featured at the FIFA World Cup in Russia last year.

This includes the likes of Ahmed Musa, Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, Leon Balogun and veteran midfielder John Mikel Obi, who will captain Nigeria after returning to the national team fold in the wake of a "productive" meeting with the coach.

Villarreal winger Samuel Chukwueze and 2015 U17 World Cup winner Victor Osimhen were also both included, and will be hoping to feature in their first-ever international tournament at senior level, while Amakhosi goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi also kept hisplace in the squad.

Rohr's side were held to a goalless stalemate by Zimbabwe in a friendly in Asaba on Saturday, and will now jet to Egypt for a pre-tournament friendly against Senegal on 16 June.

The three-time AFCON champions have been placed in Group B at the Nations Cup, alongside Guinea, Madagascar and Burundi.

The Super Eagles will face Burundi on 22 June at the Alexandria Stadium, Alexandria.
