Sky Sports has reported that the 33-year-old Spaniard will not be joining Serie A side Genoa in this transfer window.
The goalkeeper appeared set for a return to football after leaving Manchester United as a free agent in 2023, before the club signed Andre Onana.
It is said that De Gea's wage demands ultimately cost him a move to Genoa, who will now be moving on to other targets.
The former Atletico Madrid shot-stopper was once considered among the best in his position in the world prior to suffering a dip in form at United.
His style of play was thought to not be suitable to Erik ten Hag's system at the Red Devils, with De Gea not known for his ability on the ball.
