Messi and Lamine Yamal share similarities in that both are left-footed players and products of the La Masia Academy.
The current Netherlands Manager, who coached Messi during his final season at Barcelona, said the comparisons between the two players should stop, according to Eldes Marque.
"I hope the player doesn't compare himself to Leo Messi and that he works every day to improve," Koeman said.
"I think that's the most important thing in football. He's young, and life takes many twists and turns so you have to work hard and be serious to be a great player," the Dutchman said.
According to Barca Universal, Koeman said the young star has the potential to be a more important player than he is now but called for the comparisons to stop and said there will never be a player as important to Barcelona's history than Messi was.
"He shouldn’t be compared to Messi because Messi is a unique player, and that’s all there is to it," the former Everton manager said.

"Messi was fantastic, and certainly with the passing years and gaining experience, Lamine will improve more and more, but I don’t think we’ll ever see a player in the future who was as important to Barcelona as Messi was,” he added.
