The 35-year-old has proved a pivotal player for the Albiceleste ever since adorning their jersey for the first time in 2007.
The highlight of what has been a distinguished international career will likely be winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup, a contest in which he scored in the final.
However, the skilful winger has now admitted that he will not be around for their defence as world champions as he plans to retire after the looming Copa America tournament.
The Benfica man revealed this while speaking to Todo Pasa, and also lifted the lid on what he told Lionel Messi before he left Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the 2021/22 season.
"I will leave the Argentina national team after Copa America – it's over for me," the attacker said.
"I hugged Messi at PSG and told him: the only thing I'm grateful for is to have been able to play with you in a club, to be able to see you every day."
While the Rosario native may not be around for their world title defence in Mexico, Canada and the United States of America in 2026, he will be present for their continental championship defence. When they won the tournament in 2021, it was Di Maria who scored the only goal of the final as they defeated arch-rivals Brazil.
