Spanish giants FC Barcelona are reportedly heavy favourites to enter the newly-expanded FIFA Club World Cup as a replacement side for Club Leon.
Barcelona's hopes of participating in the new competition were dashed due to poor performances in Europe in the last few seasons, which allowed Atletico Madrid to claim the second Spanish spot, Barca Universal reported.
Mexican journalist David Faitelson reportedly claimed there are conversations at FIFA to invite Barcelona to the competition.
The Catalan side were handed a lifeline after Club Leon's suspension from the tournament. The Mexican side's owners, Grupo Pachuca, violated FIFA's multi-club ownership rules as the group also owns CF Pachuca, who are also participating in the competition.
The Blaugrana's participation in the Club World Cup would be a significant financial boost for the side.
