The hosts produced the first real shot on target in the ninth minute when Kharatin drilled a low attempt on goal, but Romero did well to save low to his right. The visitors did well to negate most of the United attacks in the early stages, frustrating the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic. In the 35th minute there was a penalty shout from the Red Devils when Paul Pogba went down in the box. The Frenchman played a one-two with Ibrahimovic before going down, but nothing was given. The breakthrough arrived three minutes into the second half. Henrikh Mkhitaryan raced into the box and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way before slotting it with a neat finish. The pace of the game was down to a crawl around the hour mark as neither side really created clear-cut chances. In the 88th minute the travelers found their second goal. Pogba played the ball in behind the defence and Ibrahimovic was on hand to provide a clever finish over the goalkeeper to secure the win.
