Five African Superstars Who De Sa Coached With Queiroz

With Roger De Sa joining Cape Town City for the remainder of the season, Soccer Laduma highlights five African stars he worked with while being an understudy to Carlos Queiroz.

The Mozambican-born tactician will be returning to South African top-flight action for the first time in seven years when the international break concludes, as he has been confirmed by the Citizens as their newest assistant following the recent departure of Mushin Ertugral.

The Maputo native will be working under interim boss Diogo Peral alongside fellow assistant Lebogang Manyama for the remainder of the season, but while many avid watchers of the Premier Soccer League will be wondering why a former head coach was willing to accept an assistant coaching role, it is a position he has familiarised himself with since 2021.

That year, former Bafana Bafana head coach Queiroz decided to make his fellow Mozambican-born tactician his assistant as they coached Egypt, Iran and Qatar for the proceeding two years. Of the three aforementioned nations, it was the Pharaohs where they spent the most time, and during their spell, they worked with some quality players.

The most elite of them is undoubtedly Mohamed Salah. Ever since completing his move to Liverpool in 2017, the prolific forward has consistently been one of the best goalscorers in world football for club and country.

Queiroz and De Sa almost managed to add to his illustrious legacy when they made it to the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations final but were defeated by Senegal in a penalty shootout.

While the Southern African-born duo found Salah as a fully-fledged superstar, they did give a national team debut to a player who is heading in a Salah-like trajectory career-wise in Omar Marmoush.

The 25-year-old attacker was recently acquired by Manchester City to help Pep Guardiola's charges return to the top after a stellar start to the season with Eintracht Frankfurt.

However, when he was given a debut by Queiroz for the record African champions, he was playing consistently in the German top flight for the first time with Stuttgart.

City will be hoping that the experience De Sa accumulated while working with players such as these will help them stave off any threat of relegation.
