The story
On Monday, Cape Town City announced the decision to part ways with technical director and interim head coach, Ertugral, following a string of disappointing results in the Betway Premiership.
The decision came after a 1-0 defeat to Marumo Gallants over the weekend, marking the final straw for the experienced mentor.
The former Kaizer Chiefs coach, who joined City three months ago, tool charge of 14 matches since taking over following Eric Tinkler's sacking in December.
Although Ertugral made a strong start, winning his first two games against both Soweto giants, Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, the 65-year-old has since endured a 10-match winless streak.
The loss to Gallants at the Athlone Stadium on Saturday left City in 13th place in the Premiership standings. The club is now at risk of failing to secure a Top Eight finish for the first time in their nine-season history in the top-flight, with the looming threat of relegation.
"It's never easy to say goodbye, but sometimes the game leads us down unexpected paths, I'll always be grateful for the memories, the lessons, and the incredible players I've had the privilege to know," wrote Ertugral in his farewell message, shared on Instagram.
"Though some situations may seem unfortunate, I believe there's always an opportunity to turn them into something greater. I wish nothing but success and good fortune for the team. Boys, Keep pushing, stay strong, and may luck always be on your side.
"Thank you for everything—wishing you all the best for the journey ahead," he added.
