The story
Thuso Phala recently spoke about the highlights of his near-two-decade long career in South Africa's top flight, after officially announcing his retirement in late 2023.
The 38-year-old was reportedly forced to hang up his boots for health reasons, with Black Leopards being the last club he represented back in 2020.
The retired baller represented major clubs like Kaizer Chiefs, Sundowns, and SuperSport United, also representing Bafana Bafana on 20 occasions.
Despite winning four major trophies as a player, Phala's career was marred by disciplinary issues off the pitch, with the former attacker earning the reputation of being an avid partier.
"Phalaza" recently sat down with Andile Ncube on the Sports Nights Amplified Metro FM show, to discuss his playing days and his post-retirement ventures.
Ncube also asked Phala about what he regards as the best moments of his career, to which Phala responded, "For me, it's scoring a goal for the national team."
The ex-Matsatsantsa star represented Bafana across two Africa Cup of Nations tournaments in 2013 and 2015. He scored one of his two international goals against Algeria in the 2015 edition, where South Africa crashed out in the group stages in Equatorial Guinea.
"Maybe it's because there's so few of them (national team goals) that I remember them so fondly. Zambia at Orlando Stadium was my first and then in [Equatorial] Guinea against Algeria. I remember it [goal against Algeria] vividly, how it happened.
"It went wide on the left and Tokello [Rantie] came in the box and hit a cut-back to Vila [Sibusiso Vilakazi], who beat a player but instead of going for goal, he rolled it to me, I took a touch and in front of me I could see the open net. I remember the night before, Vila, [Bongani] Zungu and I were practicing celebrations. So, we had a celebration planned.
"When I scored, all of our teammates just jumped on us so, Villa and I weren't able to do it. Maybe I could have had another dance or something," recalled Phala.
