TOP 5: The Best Amakhosi Kits Since The 1990s

TOP 5: The Best Amakhosi Kits Since The 1990s

With January being Amakhosi 53rd birthday month, we look at the top 5 of their finest jerseys since the 1990s.

Check it out!

What's the story?

Kaizer Chiefs is celebrating its 53rd year as one of Africa's biggest club's and to commemorate that, #FanPark is rolling back the years to look at Amakhosi's best kits since the 90s.

The Khosi Nation may be reeling after a 1-0 loss to party poopers Sekhukhune United but there's still plenty for them to celebrate and look back on during the club's birthday month.

Here's a look at the best Chiefs kits...

Number 5: Home 1997-98 season

Almost 26 years ago, Amakhosi boasted ballers such as the legendary Doctor Khumalo, the late Isaac Shakes Kungwane, as well as Neil Tovey and Bradley Carnell.

Finishing second in the league that season, Amakhosi's home strip from 1997/98 is a certified 90s classic.

The v-neck Reebok jersey had details of the club crest and the Reebok logo embossed on the front and back, with the red Total logo giving it that pop of colour, similar to what we've seen with Vodacom's logos on their jerseys over the last few years.

The Total logo is matched by accents of red on the collar and sleeves of this strip, which is still celebrated by vintage jersey collectors:

Number 4: Home 2006-07 season

Amakhosi fans will always hold this jersey in high esteem as it was worn by legends of the club who will always be celebrated by not only the Khosi Nation, but South African football in general.

Ballers such as the late Emmanuel Scarra Ngobese, Siyabonga Nkosi, Gert van Schalkwyk, Tinashe Nengomasha, Shaun Bartlett, Thabo Mooki, Jimmy Tau, current coach Arthur Zwane, with current skipper Itumeleng Khune as a third-choice keeper, this squad was stacked!

The jersey itself was also a thing of beauty. From the T90 Nike kit template, the 06/07 home jersey is easily one of Nike's best designs for the Soweto giants.

The details are minimal but distinct, with the logo placings also being placed in a non-traditional manner.

The stunner resembles Barcelona's neon yellow third kit of that season, worn by Samuel Eto'o, Ronaldinho, Xavi and Andres Iniesta.

Number 3: Home 2019-20 season

Nike put out all the stops for Amakhosi's kit designs for their 50th anniversary celebration.

The celebrated US sportswear brand went full abstract for Kaizer Chiefs' home jersey for that season.

The mesmerizing design wasn't loved at first sight by a number of Chiefs supporters upon release, but the daring design has to considered as one of the club's coolest and bravest designs.

Using the Nike Vapor template, the Amakhosi 2019/2020 home jersey featured hypnotic black and yellow stripes, which somewhat resembles parts of the club's crest, and is finished with black sleeves and their 50th anniversary logo on the inside neck of the jersey.

A contemporary classic, and yet somehow it was upstaged by their third kit of that season.

Number 2: Away 2000-2001 season

Another classic from Amakhosi's jersey archives is the white 2000/01 jersey. The first away kit on this list, Nike's first away kit for the Glamour Boys stayed true to a classic 90s style jersey.

The collared stunner was worn by mercurial legends such as Siyabonga Nomvethe, Jabu Pule Mahlangu, Doctor Khumalo, Arthur Zwane and the sturdy Cyril Nzama.

The jersey featured a black collar, with a yellow lining, two yellow stripes on either side and a neat black and yellow cuffs to match the collar.

The elegant design is right up there in terms of Nike's most underrated kit designs, and it kicked off a beautiful journey between the Soweto giants and Nike, a relationship that's sadly coming to and end this season.

Number 1: Third kit 2019-20 season

The stunning black jersey that paid tribute to the club's strong heritage and rich history is our number 1!

Three years ago, Amakhosi unveiled a contemporary classic, their special 50th anniversary jersey. It's become normal practice for clubs to have three separate kits for a season, the third tends to move away from the conventional colours and designs seen on the normal home and away strips.

Amakhosi's third kit for the 2019/20 is straight from the top drawer. The black strip, featured gold accents, to give it a regal and classy feel when a player of a fan wears it.

The jersey pays homage to the club's formative years and their early jerseys that were worn during the 1970s. The club used former striker Bernard Parker and legends Doctor Khumalo to launch it.

All logos on the third kit come in metallic gold, along with a black and gold version of the club crest. The jersey was so highly-rated to the point where Nike incorporated a similar design for Barcelona's third kit for the same season:
