Salah Equals Messi Record As Liverpool Open 11-Point Lead

Liverpool moved 11 points clear of Arsenal at the Premier League table with a 2-0 victory away to Manchester City on Sunday evening.

Premier League

Result: Manchester City 0-3 Liverpool

Date: 23 February 2025

Venue: Etihad Stadium

The big team news on the came for the Cityzens as striker Erling Haaland was left out of the squad completely, although Kevin de Bruyne and Jeremy Doku did return to the starting line-up.

The Reds got the breakthrough in the 14th minute with a move straight from the training ground as Dominik Szoboszlai flick a corner into the path of Salah, who slammed home his 25th league goal of the season.

The certainly came against the run of play as Pep Guardiola's charges were dominant in possession, while Doku and Savinho were proving to be quite a handful on the respective flanks.

The home side thought they had restored parity on 30 minutes when Omar Marmoush sneaked in and sent a fine finish beyond Alisson Becker, however celebrations were cut short as the Egyptian was flagged offside.

The Reds doubled their lead eight minutes later when Salah turned provider to get on the end of Trent Alexander-Arnold's long ball before picking out Szoboszlai, who took one touch before firing into the bottom corner.

In doing so, Salah became the first player since Lionel Messi in 2015 to register an assist and a goal in 11 league games in a single season.

Liverpool had the ball in the back of the net for a third time ten minutes into the second half when Szoboszlai set up Curtis Jones for the simple tap-in, but the goal was ruled out for an offside on the former.

City looked for a way back into the contest, with Doku causing the most trouble down the left flank but the Reds defence remained resolute and thwarted every attack in the final third.

Here's how they line up:

Manchester City: Ederson, Lewis, Khusanov, Ake, Gvardiol, Nico, De Bruyne, Savinho, Foden, Doku, Marmoush

Liverpool: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson, Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Szoboszlai, Jones, Salah, Diaz
