Ex-Downs Striker Joins National Team After Going AWOL

A former Mamelodi Sundowns striker has joined up with his national team despite going AWOL earlier this year.

Abubeker Nassir was unveiled by SuperSport United at the start of the 2024/25 season but has not made a single competitive appearances for the club.

In January, SuperSport head coach Gavin Hunt revealed to KickOff that he had no idea of the striker's whereabouts.

According to Pan African Football, the 25-year-old has now joined up with the Ethiopian national team ahead of the international break.

Nasir was on the bench for SuperSport during a Betway Premiership clash against Magesi in December.

However, it remains to be seen if Nassir will feature due to a lack of match fitness while his last appearance for the national team came in 2022 during a 2-0 win over Egypt.

Ethiopia's next encounter will be against the Pharaohs on 21 March before they take on Djibouti.
