Orlando Pirates have paid tribute to Sphiwe Ngwenya – the club's former scout and assistant coach – who sadly passed away.
Ngwenya was the scout for Mamelodi Sundowns at the time of his passing, as confirmed by the Soweto giants.
During his time with the Buccaneers, Ngwenya worked closely with Augusto Palacios in the development, while he also had a stint with the first team as assistant coach under the renowned Peruvian mentor.
"Orlando Pirates Football Club is saddened to learn of the passing away of Sphiwe Ngwenya," Pirates confirmed in a statement on the club's official website.
"Ngwenya, who was working at Mamelodi Sundowns as a scout at the time of his passing, cut his teeth at the Orlando Pirates Development Academy for 12 years under the tutelage of Augusto Palacios. Ngwenya also briefly worked as Assistant Coach alongside Palacios in 2012. On behalf of Orlando Pirates, we convey our heartfelt and deepest sympathy to Mamelodi Sundowns and the Ngwenya family and pledge our profound moral support," Bucs stated.
