Mamelodi Sundowns Owner Patrice Motsepe Predicts Bright Future For PSL Football
Mamelodi Sundowns owner Patrice Motsepe says South Africans should be proud of the growing competition in the Absa Premiership but believes there is "still a long way to go" in the development of domestic football. Read: Pitso: Downs Have To Get 10 Titles And Another Star The billionaire mining magnate was able to join in the celebrations after the full-time whistle at the Dr Molemela Stadium on Saturday as Sundowns were officially crowned league champions following their final-day draw at Bloemfontein Celtic. The success marked a record eighth Absa Premiership crown for the Brazilians, five of which have been secured with Motsepe at the helm, although it was anything but a walkthrough as Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs and even Maritzburg United were amongst the title challengers heading into the final third of the campaign. At the other end of the spectrum, none know the increased level of competition better than top-flight ever-presents Ajax Cape Town, whose Premiership status is now in doubt after finishing in the PSL relegation play-off spot, while Platinum Stars suffered automatic relegation and will contest the National First Division next term. Read: Mabunda Thankful For Support Speaking of the growing competition in the PSL, Mostepe told SuperSport: "We want to thank the supporters, Pitso, the players, also the leadership of the PSL - wonderful work - and each and every team. "A lot of very, very good work has been done and I think we can all be very, very proud as South Africans - the quality of football is very, very good. "But, there's still a long way to go and we just hope that the good work that Pitso is doing with the players will continue." When asked if Sundowns were realising the vision he had set out for the club, Motsepe said: "Well, you know, it's the ambitions of supporters, of various stakeholders, it's not necessarily my vision. I think I'm just honoured to be part of many, many stakeholders, who've made humble contributions, including the players and club owners who were there before me."
