Should Orlando Pirates decide against keeping goalkeeper Siyabonga Mpontshane at the end of the season, then Polokwane City are understood to be hot favourites to snap up the veteran when his contract is up.
The 38-year-old signed for the Buccaneers almost a decade ago from the now defunct Platinum Stars and has seen the club go through a list of goal minders while he stayed on and being used by different coaches.
Mpontshane is well-liked by his teammates as evidenced by his only appearance in the DStv Premiership this season when he came off the bench to replace the injured Sipho Chaine in the 7-1 thrashing of Golden Arrows.
Pirates are not short of quality goalkeepers if you add Richard Ofori and Melusi Buthelezi to the mix, but Mpotshane's days could be numbered given that his current deal is up for renewal at the end of June.
He has been a solid back-up for several seasons now and Siya sources have informed the crew that with the future of Ofori still up in the air…so is that of Mpontshane.
It's further believed that City, who were promoted back to the topflight this season, are monitoring the situation and would consider taking on the experienced goalie on a free transfer should he be made available.
Mpontshane isn't ready to hang up his gloves just yet and would relish an opportunity to continue playing, especially if there's a chance, he could be the first choice.
