Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena last week dropped a bombshell, revealing in an interview that midfielder Gaston Sirino has requested a transfer away from the club this season.
Speaking on Power FM, the Downs mentor answered a question regarding the Uruguayan's lack of game-time by confirming Sirino had indeed informed them there would be an offer for his services in the coming days.
The Siya crew has been informed the bid could very well be from Al-Wahda of United Arab Emirates, a team currently coached by Pitso Mosimane following his appointment in July after he'd parted company with Saudi Arabia's Al-Ahli.
Sirino joined Sundowns in January 2018 at the time Mosimane was still head coach at Chloorkop, prior to his departure nearly two years later. And this is not the first time the player has expressed a desire to leave the DStv Premiership title holders – his first attempt was several months after Mosimane joined Egyptian giants Al Ahly.
The player told Soccer Laduma in a brief interview back in November 2020 that it was "my intention to leave" only if Sundowns accept the offer from their bitter rivals on the African continent.
But the move failed to materialise as the two clubs went back and forth with no real desire to do business over any players at the time. Sirino had, in fact, just signed a new three-year contract with an option for two more seasons that would have to be triggered before the start of the 2023/24 campaign, and information reaching the Siya crew is that it was!
The midfielder remains contracted to Downs until June 2025 and any suitors would have to pay a sizeable transfer fee.
