It might still be early into the new season, but there are already talks of Orlando Pirates possibly making another important decision with regards to the future of Thabang Monare, one of the key players in the team, by offering him a new deal.
The midfield grafter has emerged as one of the key figures in coach Jose Riveiro's team with the Buccaneers involved in DStv Premiership, MTN8 and CAF Champions League matches in recent weeks. The 33-year-old started in all four matches in the league, with the latest being the 2-0 victory over Cape Town City at the Orlando Stadium as the side moved to fourth on the standings (before Wednesday evening's fixtures).
The former Jomo Cosmos and Bidvest Wits star will be expected to play a key role on the weekend with the Soweto giants away to Stellenbosch FC in the MTN8 at Athlone Stadium to continue with his fine form in the engine room.
In July, as the defending MTN8 champions made crucial decisions on the squad for the current season, Monare was offered a new one-year contract extension. It was a second one-year deal extension in two years for the star after the club had offered him the previous one last year when the original two-year contract he signed when he joined from the Clever Boys in 2020 expired.
Indications from close sources are that the player has already impressed the technical team enough to possibly get another extension to take him beyond June 2024.
"Thabang Monare's progress at Pirates isn't going unnoticed, the club is impressed with his work-rate. He is an experienced player who is helping those around him, especially the younger ones, to do well," revealed a source.
"He is likely to stay beyond his current contract, which will expire in June next year. The club is likely to offer him another contract extension of one year," added the source added.
