Insiders: Khune's Choice On His Future

Insiders: Khune's Choice On His Future

Kaizer Chiefs are entering a pivotal moment regarding the future of one of their most iconic figures, Itumeleng Khune, whose contract is set to expire in June, the Siya crew investigates.

With reported interest from Sekhukhune United and discussions about a potential non-playing role at Chiefs, the decision ultimately rests with Khune himself.

Now, Siya sources close to both the club and the player have indicated how Amakhosi have offered Khune the chance to chart his own path forward.

This gesture underscores the respect and admiration the club holds for its long-serving goalkeeper.

Though, the sources have added that Khune probably won't have the opportunity to continue as a player anymore.

"For now Khune still has a future at the club. It could not be in the playing capacity but the club still wants to keep him. He has a legacy at the club and the club are proud to use him where he could fit in well," said the Siya source.

"You remember at first it was proposed that he could be working in the marketing department with Jessica (Motaung) or also in the goalkeeping department but (that choice) now lies in his own hands because he has indicated that he would like to play for at least one or two more seasons before retiring.

"So, now it's all up to Khune to decide whether he joins the backroom staff or he moves on to another club where he can play further," the source told Soccer Laduma.

A second Siya source stated that Khune would still have to wait for official approaches from teams interested to use him as a keeper, whether that could be for a season or two before he moves behind the scenes.

"The thing is, at the moment there is no official approach for Khune from any DStv Premiership side or any other team. If that comes through or the player tells the club he wants to move on and play then they will take it from there. So, there are talks going on but Khune will make the final decision himself," the source added.

Khune, who will turn 37 on June 20, had last appeared for Chiefs in a match against arch-rivals Orlando Pirates in September 2023, which ended in a 1-0 defeat. However, he did participate in the Carling All Stars team on January 6, 2024, securing a 2-1 victory over Stellenbosch FC.

Throughout the current league season, Khune has been limited to just four appearances for Amakhosi.

Soccer Laduma contacted Chiefs for comment on the matter but no response was received by the time this story was published.

The situation presents a significant crossroad in Khune's illustrious career, as he contemplates his next steps, whether it be extending his playing career elsewhere or transitioning into a new role within Chiefs that has always been his home.
