Mamelodi Sundowns are expected to do an end-of-season breakdown and debrief over where their star-studded squad needs strengthening and Iqraam Rayners has come up as a potential target for the Brazilians, the Siya crew has heard.
With a team as strong as that of Sundowns, it's hard to pick holes in just where they need to improve. But their ongoing quest for CAF Champions League glory means that the club continues to search for answers.
One area of concern is their lack of a replacement for their strikers Lucas Ribeiro Costa and Peter Shalulile and a local option at that. In January, Sundowns were hellbent on finding a South African striker, knocking on the doors of Al Ahly for Percy Tau, Cape Town City for Khanyisa Mayo, Pyramids for Fagrie Lakay and even nomadic Lars Veldwijk emerged as a candidate.
But the league champions have turned their attention to one man, in Iqraam Rayners, who ticks all the boxes, regarding what the Chloorkop outfit are looking for.
Whether they can sway the arm of Stellies to part ways with their talisman and a man who has contributed 31 goals and 16 assists over the last two seasons is a different story altogether.
The 28-year-old has a long-term contract in place with the Winelands outfit and struggled the last time he tried his luck in Gauteng. Sundowns, though, have a track record of being unrelenting in their pursuit of a player and more often than not are able to match a club's asking price for their targets.
With the transfer window set to officially open in a few weeks' time, the Siya crew will keep you up-to-date on Rayners and Sundowns' interest.
