Linda Mntambo could be threatened into early retirement by injury, sources close to the player have revealed. The lanky midfield man has been a notable absentee from Sekhukhune United's starting line-ups after making only 14 appearances in all competitions last season.
Prior to coming back for a rare appearance in the league in February, he had last played in October. Mntambo joined the side last year with high hopes of resurrecting his career after struggling for regular game-time at Orlando Pirates.
According to a close source, the 34-year-old has struggled to shake off an ankle injury that is troubling him despite having already gone for surgery to fix it.
"Mntambo's injury situation is a cause for concern as he has spent long spells on the sidelines nursing it. He has done everything to fix it, but it just won't heal properly to allow him to play. It is threatening his career as age is no longer on his side," a source revealed.
"He is unlikely to have his contract at Sekhukhune extended. It is so unfortunate that things turned out the way they did for him as the club expected him to contribute massively to the team's progress and that's why he was even made the captain when he arrived from Pirates," the source went on.
While 'Figo' continues undergoing rehabilitation, Babina Noko are expected to decide on the one-year option on his contract, with the original deal set to end in June next year.
