However, there has been confusion for some on the identity of the two teams as Sundowns and Pirates will also be involved in the final of the Nedbank Cup – a competition whose winner usually participates in the Confederation Cup.
For their third-place finish, Stellenbosch FC are scheduled to fill one spot in the Confederation Cup, while sources in the know have confirmed that the other will be occupied by Sekhukhune United who ended their campaign in fourth place.
"In finishing third on the log, Stellenbosch have qualified for the CAF Confederation Cup, and will be joined by Sekhukhune United who finished as the fourth placed team as Sundowns and Pirates, who have already qualified for the Champions League, will be playing in the Nedbank Cup final. It's something that is also in the CAF rules," said the informant.
According to CAF Confederation Cup regulations, section IV. on Engagements, the following should happen with regards to this season's results in the DStv Premiership:
8. For the countries having the right to engage two teams, in case the cup winner and the runner-up cannot engage in the Confederation Cup, the Inter-Clubs Committee reserves the right to accept another club. In that case, the national league standings should be the priority over the national cup.
